Reading the Right Books: A Guide for the Intelligent Conservative

Reading the Right Books: A Guide for the Intelligent Conservative

Books contain the ideas, make the arguments, and preserve the history necessary for the maintenance and perpetuation of liberty. Reading the Right Books is a practical list of thoughtful and accessible books — not the "classics" but solidly good books — recommended to provide a general framework around which the reader can build a firmer structure of political knowledge. Edited and annotated by Lee Edwards, the Distinguished Fellow in Conservative Thought at The Heritage Foundation, Reading the Right Books is a guide for intelligent, conservative-minded readers who want to prepare themselves for a public life of thought and action, and so seek to know more about politics, public policy and modern conservative thought, as well as literature, economics, religion, history, and statesmanship.

I am currently reading "Dear John" by Nicholas Sparks. It's pretty good so far.

And I was talking to my English teacher today, and apparently she's reading it right now too, however she's a little bit ahead of me. She told me that she cried for about 4 nights as she was reading it. I wonder how I'm gonna be.

Yes, you read it right. There was water damage from a slow leaky pipe, leading to dampness, mildew, icky carpets and these lovely mushrooms in the corner behind furniture.

Day 117: The green green grass...

Day 117: The green green grass...

26/04/2008

Playing in the grass before I cut it off for the first time this year. The job to cut the grass is usually mine, since I was a kid I used to do it to earn a little extra cash or quite often as a punishment. I enjoy the process usually, the grass smells nice (luckily I don’t get hay-fever), I get to hook on my ears and enjoy some music, get some good honest sweat going, plus that sense of achievement when I’m finished and that nicely striped green carpet looks back at me.

Still something in me likes the unkempt, rambling look of an uncut lawn...

You Don't Look Like Anyone I Know

An unusual and uncommonly moving family memoir, with a twist that give new meaning to hindsight, insight, and forgiveness.

Heather Sellers is face-blind-that is, she has prosopagnosia, a rare neurological condition that prevents her from reliably recognizing people's faces. Growing up, unaware of the reason for her perpetual confusion and anxiety, she took what cues she could from speech, hairstyle, and gait. But she sometimes kissed a stranger, thinking he was her boyfriend, or failed to recognize even her own father and mother. She feared she must be crazy.

Yet it was her mother who nailed windows shut and covered them with blankets, made her daughter walk on her knees to spare the carpeting, had her practice secret words to use in the likely event of abduction. Her father went on weeklong "fishing trips" (aka benders), took in drifters, wore panty hose and bras under his regular clothes. Heather clung to a barely coherent story of a "normal" childhood in order to survive the one she had.

That fairy tale unraveled two decades later when Heather took the man she would marry home to meet her parents and began to discover the truth about her family and about herself. As she came at last to trust her own perceptions, she learned the gift of perspective: that embracing the past as it is allows us to let it go. And she illuminated a deeper truth-that even in the most flawed circumstances, love may be seen and felt.

Pathfinder: John Charles Fremont and the Course of American Empire

Pathfinder: John Charles Fremont and the Course of American Empire

The amazing life of the explorer who first mapped the West and forever changed nineteenth-century America

The career of John Charles Fremont (1813-90) celebrates and ties together the full breadth of American expansionism from its eighteenth-century origins through its culmination in the Gilded Age. Tom Chaffin's important new biography demonstrates Fremont's vital importance to the history of American empire, and his role in shattering long-held myths about the ecology and habitability of the American West.

As the most celebrated American explorer and mapper of his time, Fremont stood at the center of the vast federal project of Western exploration and conquest. His expeditions between 1838 and 1854 captured the public's imagination, inspired Americans to accept their nation's destiny as a vast continental empire, and earned him his enduring sobriquet, the Pathfinder.

But Fremont was more than an explorer. Chaffin's dramatic narrative includes Fremont's varied experiences as an entrepreneur, abolitionist, Civil War general, husband to the remarkable Jessie Benton Fremont, two-time Republican presidential candidate, and Gilded Age aristocrat.

Chaffin brings to life the personal and political experiences of a remarkable American whose saga offers compelling insight into the conflicts, tensions, and contradictions at the core of America's lust for empire and its conquest of the trans-Missouri West.

Las Vegas: Fremont Street - Binion's Horseshoe

Las Vegas: Fremont Street - Binion's Horseshoe

Binion's Horseshoe, also known as the Horseshoe Casino or simply the Horseshoe, was named for its founder, Benny Binion, who bought the Eldorado Club and Apache Hotel in 1951. It was the first casino to have carpeting and comps available to all gamblers. Binion also instituted high table limits, even dropping table limits completely at times, which was an immediate hit.

Benny served time in Leavenworth Penitentiary from 1953 to 1957 for tax evasion and was forced to sell his share of the casino to pay approximately $5 million in legal costs. In 1964 his family regained control, but as a convicted felon, Benny was no longer allowed to hold a gambling license.

In 1970, Jack Binion began hosting the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Horseshoe. Eventually, the WSOP became the largest set of poker tournaments in the world. In 1988, the Horseshoe expanded by acquiring The Mint, a high-rise hotel on the west side of the casino. The expansion of the casino from this purchase provided room for Binion's first poker room.

In March 2004, Harrah's Entertainment purchased Binion's Horseshoe. Harrah's Entertainment sold Binion's Horseshoe on March 11, 2004 to MTR Gaming Group. Harrah's retained the rights to the Horseshoe brand and the World Series of Poker when it sold the casino and hotel, but sold the Binion's brand

Fremont Street, Las Vegas, 1977

Fremont Street, Las Vegas, 1977

Fremont Street is rich in history. It held many Las Vegas "firsts," including first hotel (the Hotel Nevada in 1906, present day Golden Gate), first telephone (1907), first paved street (1925), first Nevada gaming license — issued to the Northern Club at 15 E. Fremont St, first traffic light, first elevator (the Apache Hotel in 1932), and the first high-rise (the Fremont Hotel in 1956). The Horseshoe was the first casino to install carpeting, while the Golden Nugget was the first structure designed from the ground up to be a casino.

For many years, the western end of Fremont Street was the area most commonly portrayed whenever producers wanted to display the lights of Las Vegas. The large number of neon signs earned the area the nickname "Glitter Gulch."

BANGKA BOAT on Banol Beach, Calamianes Group of Islands, Palawan, Philippines

BANGKA BOAT

The outrigger canoe Maori: waka ama; Cook Islands Maori: vaka ama; Hawaiian: wa?a; Tahitian and Samoan:va?a;) is a type of canoe featuring one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers, which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull.

Smaller canoes often employ a single outrigger on the port side, while larger canoes may employ a single outrigger, double outrigger, or double hull configuration (see also catamaran).

Using an outrigger or double hull configuration greatly increases the stability of the canoe, but introduces much less hydrodynamic inefficiency than making a single hull canoe wider.

Compared to other types of canoes, outrigger canoes can be quite fast, yet are also capable of being paddled and sailed in rougher water. This paddling technique, however, differs greatly from kayaking or rowing. The paddle, or blade, used by the paddler is single sided, with either a straight or a double-bend shaft. Despite the single paddle an experienced paddler will only paddle on one side, using a technique such as a J-stroke to maintain heading and stability.

PALAWAN

Palawan is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, and it is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of jurisdiction.

The islands of Palawan stretch from Mindoro in the northeast to Borneo in the southwest. It lies between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea.

The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island, measuring 450 kilometers (280 mi) long, and 50 kilometers (31 mi) wide.

Palawan is composed of the long and narrow Palawan Island, plus a number of other smaller islands surrounding the main island.

The Calamianes Group of Islands, to the northwest consists of Busuanga Island, Culion Island, and Coron Island. Durangan Island almost touches the westernmost part of Palawan Island, while Balabac Island is located off the southern tip, separated from Borneo by the Balabac Strait.

In addition, Palawan covers the Cuyo Islands in the Sulu Sea. The disputed Spratly Islands, located a few hundred kilometers to the west is considered part of Palawan by the Philippines, and is locally called the Kalayaan Group of Islands.

Palawan's almost 2,000 kilometers (1,200 mi) of irregular coastline are dotted with roughly 1,780 islands and islets, rocky coves, and sugar-white sandy beaches. It also harbors a vast stretch of virgin forests that carpet its chain of mountain ranges.

The mountain heights average 3,500 feet (1,100 m) in altitude, with the highest peak rising to 6,843 feet (2,086 m)[ at Mount Mantalingahan. The vast mountain areas are the source of valuable timber.

The terrain is a mix of coastal plain, craggy foothills, valley deltas, and heavy forest interspersed with riverine arteries that serve as irrigation.

Mana, or the Dance of Life

Mana, or the Dance of Life

This is a beach house in Santa Cruz photographed on spec in 1988. It has been expanded and reconstructed in PhotoShop to encompass various periods in my life. “Mana” is the Hawaiian word for the vast reservoir of energy that supports all life, which is represented in their culture by the ocean, source of life. The door and corridor on the right were added; the windows were smaller and ceiling lower. Someone's dirty clothes were on the bed, and athletic shoes under the dresser. I replaced the shoes with a pair of my work boots, photographed in 1990, because someone told me I should take a picture of them. I replaced their books and picture with my books and a photo of my sons, and added the painting on the wall. That's something I painted in 1978, showing a "time traveler" passing through an Einstein-Rosen Bridge. The left dresser is actually on the wall opposite the windows, next to where I stood when I took this photo. The reflection in that mirror seems like it would be correct if you were right of center in the room and glanced that way, but its actually what you would see if you were standing on the left side of the room looking to your right. The reflections in the window are my wife and I dancing at our wedding reception, flanked by each son's graduation from basic training. Out the door, that's me and the boys ready to go for a ride in 1987. The "carpet" is the night sky from the painting. There is a lot of detail, so I did this as a huge file to print at 36x24. I had one done on canvas. I've never lived in this house. I just spent a couple hours there once taking pictures. I just just liked all that wood, the furniture, and the ocean color.

The Mayor of Lexington Avenue

Growing up on the mean streets of New York City, Johnny and Mikey always had each other’s backs. Mikey was a loyal friend but even he knew that Johnny was headed for bigger things. That’s why he dubbed him the Mayor of Lexington Avenue.

The two friends were inseparable—until one fateful night set them on their different paths: Johnny to life as a high-powered lawyer in Miami, and Mikey to a shattered existence behind bars. Now, haunted by guilt over Mikey’s conviction, and numbed by the excesses of a successful life, Johnny finds his one last shot at redemption: A young Florida man is framed for a murder he didn’t commit, and Johnny feels compelled to fight for him—and, in a way, for Mikey. But there are powerful people who want the truth hidden, and Johnny will have to risk everything, and everyone, he cares about to save the young man…and himself.
