BANGKA BOAT on Banol Beach, Calamianes Group of Islands, Palawan, Philippines

BANGKA BOAT on Banol Beach, Calamianes Group of Islands, Palawan, Philippines

The outrigger canoe Maori: waka ama; Cook Islands Maori: vaka ama; Hawaiian: wa?a; Tahitian and Samoan:va?a;) is a type of canoe featuring one or more lateral support floats known as outriggers, which are fastened to one or both sides of the main hull.

Smaller canoes often employ a single outrigger on the port side, while larger canoes may employ a single outrigger, double outrigger, or double hull configuration (see also catamaran).

Using an outrigger or double hull configuration greatly increases the stability of the canoe, but introduces much less hydrodynamic inefficiency than making a single hull canoe wider.

Compared to other types of canoes, outrigger canoes can be quite fast, yet are also capable of being paddled and sailed in rougher water. This paddling technique, however, differs greatly from kayaking or rowing. The paddle, or blade, used by the paddler is single sided, with either a straight or a double-bend shaft. Despite the single paddle an experienced paddler will only paddle on one side, using a technique such as a J-stroke to maintain heading and stability.

Palawan is an island province of the Philippines located in the MIMAROPA region. Its capital is Puerto Princesa City, and it is the largest province in the country in terms of total area of jurisdiction.

The islands of Palawan stretch from Mindoro in the northeast to Borneo in the southwest. It lies between the South China Sea and the Sulu Sea.

The province is named after its largest island, Palawan Island, measuring 450 kilometers (280 mi) long, and 50 kilometers (31 mi) wide.

Palawan is composed of the long and narrow Palawan Island, plus a number of other smaller islands surrounding the main island.

The Calamianes Group of Islands, to the northwest consists of Busuanga Island, Culion Island, and Coron Island. Durangan Island almost touches the westernmost part of Palawan Island, while Balabac Island is located off the southern tip, separated from Borneo by the Balabac Strait.

In addition, Palawan covers the Cuyo Islands in the Sulu Sea. The disputed Spratly Islands, located a few hundred kilometers to the west is considered part of Palawan by the Philippines, and is locally called the Kalayaan Group of Islands.

Palawan's almost 2,000 kilometers (1,200 mi) of irregular coastline are dotted with roughly 1,780 islands and islets, rocky coves, and sugar-white sandy beaches. It also harbors a vast stretch of virgin forests that carpet its chain of mountain ranges.

The mountain heights average 3,500 feet (1,100 m) in altitude, with the highest peak rising to 6,843 feet (2,086 m)[ at Mount Mantalingahan. The vast mountain areas are the source of valuable timber.

The terrain is a mix of coastal plain, craggy foothills, valley deltas, and heavy forest interspersed with riverine arteries that serve as irrigation.

Mana, or the Dance of Life

Mana, or the Dance of Life

This is a beach house in Santa Cruz photographed on spec in 1988. It has been expanded and reconstructed in PhotoShop to encompass various periods in my life. “Mana” is the Hawaiian word for the vast reservoir of energy that supports all life, which is represented in their culture by the ocean, source of life. The door and corridor on the right were added; the windows were smaller and ceiling lower. Someone's dirty clothes were on the bed, and athletic shoes under the dresser. I replaced the shoes with a pair of my work boots, photographed in 1990, because someone told me I should take a picture of them. I replaced their books and picture with my books and a photo of my sons, and added the painting on the wall. That's something I painted in 1978, showing a "time traveler" passing through an Einstein-Rosen Bridge. The left dresser is actually on the wall opposite the windows, next to where I stood when I took this photo. The reflection in that mirror seems like it would be correct if you were right of center in the room and glanced that way, but its actually what you would see if you were standing on the left side of the room looking to your right. The reflections in the window are my wife and I dancing at our wedding reception, flanked by each son's graduation from basic training. Out the door, that's me and the boys ready to go for a ride in 1987. The "carpet" is the night sky from the painting. There is a lot of detail, so I did this as a huge file to print at 36x24. I had one done on canvas. I've never lived in this house. I just spent a couple hours there once taking pictures. I just just liked all that wood, the furniture, and the ocean color.
